I used lettuce, chard, mizuna, and arugula from the CSA, shaved Chioggia beets from the Hall farmstand, and added our own chick peas, feta, kale, peppers, and cucumber for a salad to serve 4!

Delicious!

CSA – Week 1

All this talk of CSA “boxes” had me expecting a carboard carton of goodies…note to self:  next week bring the reusable grocery bags or a crate!   Here is our first week’s delicious take:

We have:

  1. Green Garlic
  2. Chives
  3. Red Lolo Lettuce
  4. Green Lolo Lettuce
  5. Red Oakleaf Lettuce
  6. Swiss Chard
  7. Mizuna
  8. Arugula
  9. 1 qt strawberries

Great stuff!  And, it was truly great to get to see it growing in the fields:

If you look very closely, you might be able to see some of the insect control professionals hard at work.  (Ducks eating yummy slugs off the plants)

Gearing Up

I’ve always loved the magic of growing food…a simple seed, buried in the dirt, needs only water and sunshine to yield beautiful and delicious treats.  Even as a child I was fascinated by the process, and homegrown food always seemed to taste better than any other.  For years I’ve tried to concentrate our summer grocery list on our local Farmers’ Market and Farm Stands, but this year, I’m taking it a step further.   I’m finally taking the plunge and venturing into the world of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) this summer and I’ll be sharing our experience here, complete with information about how we prepare and preserve the Harvest.

In a CSA program, local people buy a “share” in the farmer’s harvest, in exchange for a portion of the food grown.  In our case, we paid a local farm $585 for a weekly box of locally grown organic veggies, distributed from mid-June until early November. (That’s a full share, half shares are also available)  I’ve been wanting to try a CSA share for years, but this will be our first try.

So, here we will chronicles our Adventures in Local Feasting…primarily about our weekly CSA share, but including other goodies from farm stands, farmers’ markets, and local small business sources.   More about CSAs and the local foods movement later….today, we have our first veggie box, time to jump right in!
